Early Life

Evander Holyfield was born in Atmore, Alabama, on October 19, 1962. Holyfield was the youngest of nine children and was born to a different father than his siblings.

Holyfield’s family later relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where he was raised in the Bowen Homes Housing Projects. At the age of seven, he began boxing and won the Boys Club boxing tournament. At the age of 13, he qualified for his first Junior Olympics.

By the age of 15, Holyfield had won the Southeastern Regional Championship and the Best Boxer Award. By 1984, he compiled 160 wins and 14 losses, including 76 knockout victories.

Holyfield represented the United States at the 1983 Pan American Games in Caracas, Venezuela, when he was 20 years old, winning a silver medal after losing to Cuban world champion Pablo Romero. He won the National Golden Gloves Championship the following year. He earned a bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California, following a contentious disqualification in the second round of the semi-final against New Zealand’s Kevin Barry.

Evander Holyfield made his professional debut at the age of 21 after winning the bronze medal in the Light Heavyweight division at the 1984 Summer Olympics. He was nicknamed “The Real Deal.”

He moved up to cruiserweight in 1985 and won his first title the following year, defeating Dwight Muhammad Qawi for the WBA Cruiserweight title. Following that, he defeated Ricky Parkey and Carlos De Leon to claim the Lineal, IBF, and WBC cruiserweight titles, ultimately becoming the Undisputed Cruiserweight Champion.

Holyfield’s first professional defeat occurred in 1992 when he lost to Riddick Bowe. In a rematch, he reclaimed the title one year later, defeating Bowe for the WBA and IBF titles, but lost them in an upset to Michael Moorer in 1994.

Holyfield defeated Mike Tyson in a now-infamous 1997 bout in which Tyson was disqualified for biting off a portion of Holyfield’s ear during the fight. In 1999, Holyfield lost the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles to Lennox Lewis.
