Early Life

Jesse Louis Jackson Sr. was born on October 8, 1941, in Greenville, South Carolina. Helen Burns, a 16-year-old girl, was his mother, and Noah Louis Robinson, a 33-year-old married neighbor, was his father. Jackson’s mother married Charles Henry Jackson a year after he was born, and he was eventually adopted by him as a child. Jackson’s surname was changed after the adoption to that of his stepfather, but he maintained contact with Robinson and considered both men to be his fathers.

Jackson attended Sterling High School, a racially segregated school in Greenville, where he grew up under Jim Crow rules. He received several accolades there, including a tenth place in his class, student class president, and lettering in baseball, football, and basketball.

He chose to join the University of Illinois on a football scholarship after graduating from high school in 1959. Instead of signing the contract, a minor league professional baseball organization gave him a position.

Jackson transferred to North Carolina A&T, a historically black university in Greensboro, North Carolina, after only two semesters at the University of Illinois, a predominately white institution. He thrived there, not only as a quarterback on the football team but also as student body president and as a participant in local civil rights demonstrations against segregation.

He obtained a scholarship to study for a master’s degree at the Chicago Theological Seminary after graduating with a B.S. in sociology in 1964. However, he dropped out in 1966 to devote his entire time and efforts to the civil rights fight. Based on his past studies and life experience, he was later awarded a Master of Divinity Degree in 2000.

Jesse Jackson Net Worth & Career

He was a participant in the Greenville Public Library sit-in, which at the time was solely open to white people. Their group was detained as a result of this incident, but this sparked more demonstrations over the years.

When Jackson began working with Martin Luther King Jr., he gained a lot of public attention. King was pleased by Jackson’s determination, which led to him being named president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).

In 1967, he was appointed to the position of national director. One of the primary efforts in which Jackson played an essential part was encouraging black consumers to boycott white-owned businesses. The goal of this effort was to ensure that companies hired black individuals as well.

Following King’s killing in 1968, Jackson became even more involved in protests, claiming that he was close to King when he died and that King whispered the last words of his life to him. In 1991, he was appointed as a shadow senator for the District of Columbia, where he remained for the next six years. Despite his presidential attempts being unsuccessful, Jackson continued to fight and demonstrate for modern causes.
