Cramer was born in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, on February 10, 1955. During his high school years, he attended Springfield Township High School.
He began studying stocks in fourth grade. He then enrolled at Harvard College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in government in 1977. He served as President and Editor of The Harvard Crimson during his tenure there.
