Larry Elder was born in Los Angeles, California, on the 27th of April 1952. He spent his childhood in the Pico-Union and South Central neighborhoods. Elder’s father, Randolph, served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II as a sergeant. During the Second Great Migration, his family relocated to California.
Larry’s father died in 2011, and he was then raised mostly by his mother, Viola, and two brothers. His mother worked for the United States Department of War as a clerk during World War II.
He enrolled in Crenshaw High School for his studies, from where he graduated in 1970. He then enrolled at Brown University. In 1974, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the University. He earned a J. D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1977.
