Biography

Martelly was born in Cote de Fer, the son of Gerard Martelly and Marie Madeleine Martelly, a Shell Oil executive.

According to Martelly, Martelly participated in the Haitian Military Academy after graduating from high school at the Institution Saint Louis de Gonzague but was expelled for impregnating the daughter of a general.

He moved to the United States in 1984 and worked in construction before enrolling in a community college in Miami.

He divorced his first wife, an American citizen, and returned to Haiti in 1986, just as Jean-Claude Duvalier, the country’s then-president-for-life, was about to enter exile.

Martelly returned to Miami in 1987 with his then-girlfriend, Sophia Saint-Rémy, whom he married later that year in a small ceremony in Miami, Florida. In 1988, they returned to Haiti.

Michel Martelly Net Worth & Professional Career

By 1988, Martelly’s musical ability, stagecraft, and pattering compas style had earned him enormous fame at El Rancho Hotel and Casino and another local venue, The Floresville.

That year, he released his breakthrough single, “Ou La La,” which became an instant smash, followed by 1989’s “Konpas ‘Foret des Pins'” off his debut album Ou La La.

Martelly recorded fourteen studio albums and several live CDs between 1988 and 2008. Slow méringue, compas, troubadour, carnival méringue, and rabday are all featured in his songs.

Gérard Latortue, a friend of Martelly’s, became Prime Minister following the 2004 Haitian coup d’état against Aristide. Martelly was residing in Florida at the time but returned to Haiti in 2007.

As a result of the mortgage/financial industry collapse, he defaulted on over $1 million in loans, losing three residences to foreclosure.

Martelly ran for President of Haiti in the general elections following the 2010 earthquake. He capitalized on his reputation as a musician by organizing musical gatherings known as koudjay (musical political endorsement rallies), which drew large audiences and media attention.

He also benefited from Bill Clinton’s (UN Special Envoy to Haiti) and Hillary Clinton’s (US Secretary of State) active assistance.

On 4 April 2011, a top official reported that Martelly had won the presidential run-off election with more than 60% of the vote over opponent Mirlande Manigat.
