Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones was born Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones on September 14, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York.

His mother worked for the United States Postal Service, and his father was a jazz and blues musician. Nas’ family relocated to Queens’ Long Island City neighborhood when he was a child.
