Later in 1966, French featured alongside his father in an episode of Gunsmoke titled “Prime of Life,” as well as in another episode named “The Wishbone,” in which he was credited as “Victor Frence.”

French starred in the military film The Quick and the Dead (1963), which was created by the theatre arts department at Los Angeles Valley College in Van Nuys, where Victor French studied. Ted French died in 1978.

French began his television career, like his father, as a stuntman in predominantly Westerns and anthology shows. He appeared as a guest star in 39 television shows.

Though he appeared uncredited as an office clerk in The Magnificent Seven, French’s first major Western appearance was in the 1961 episode “The Noose” of the syndicated series Two Faces West. French was cast as Larrimore in the ABC/Warner Bros. Western series The Dakotas episode “Fargo.”

A year later, French made his television debut on The Waltons. French portrays Curtis Norton, a blacksmith whose wife is unable to bear children and who later adopts an eight-year-old orphan kid who has come to spend the week on Walton’s Mountain.

This resulted in his most well-known character, Mr. Edwards, being cast in Little House on the Prairie in 1974.

French also starred opposite Elvis Presley in the 1969 Western Charro!, portrayed Agent 44 on the NBC series Get Smart from 1965 to 1966, where he portrayed an undercover spy who appeared in the most unlikely of places (like a mailbox or a porthole on a boat) and appeared in a few episodes of Bonanza alongside Michael Landon.

French made a special appearance on Kung Fu in 1973 as a corrupt, bigoted sheriff, shortly before they reunited. French also appeared as a guest star in Mission: Impossible’s season two episode 24 (“Trial by Fury”), in which he played an informer in a jail.

French made his television debut in 1976, in an episode of the Western series Sara. In 1982, he starred in the film An Officer and a Gentleman as the stepfather of Debra Winger’s protagonist Paula Pokrifki.
